Title: Scalable Audio Coding for Heterogeneous Communication Networks
Speaker: Bastiaan Kleijn
Abstract:
The increasing heterogeneity of communication networks requires
audio coders that can adapt instantaneously to bit rate constraints
and to packet loss. This talk introduces new methods that facilitate
adaptation to the network environment and describes scalable coding
architectures.
We first discuss the basic optimization criteria used in coding design
and their effect on the behavior of the coder. Then we discuss two new
techniques that facilitate scalability: a method to optimize the
distribution of rate between the coding model and the coding data and
the design of continously scalable multiple description coding to
combat time-varying packet loss. Finally we discuss new audio coding
architectures and their practical performance.
